YOGA THERAPY: A PERSONAL STORY
Client: A fit and trim 44 year old woman with a history of severe pain in her left hip
History: Since January of 2000, I had been experiencing moderate to severe pain in my left hip. I finally had to have arthroscopic surgery in July of 2001 to remove/repair a labral tear in the hip socket. The surgery reduced the pain for approximately 9 months, but then my pain level
increased exponentially and I began to have difficulty walking, standing or sitting in a car.
Yoga Therapy: In January 2001 I began taking classes at Yoga For Life in Benicia. I loved the fact that Alexa taught a heart-centered form of yoga and, after about 8 months of hit and miss attendance, I began to focus on a regular yoga practice. However, the hip pain and the feeling of instability continued until late May of 2003. At that time, I scheduled a one-on-one Yoga Therapy session with Alexa.
After three years of doctors, drugs, tests, and surgery (all of which couldn't relieve my symptoms or pain), within the first five minutes of my session with Alexa I was pain free. She recognized an imbalance of muscular action that was causing the head of my femur to be pushed out of the hip socket. She then taught me how to correct this imbalance while walking, standing and sitting using the principles of Anusara Yoga. She also instructed me in how to correct the imbalance in specific yoga poses. Continuing to practice what I learned in my Yoga Therapy session has kept me pain free ever since, and just recently I was able to hike two miles of the Kalalau Trail on the island of Kauai.
To wake up in pain, to live in pain every day for three years was difficult. To think this pain was going to be part of the rest of my life was impossible to comprehend, but my pain is no more! Thank you!
